Who is Jan?

Jan’s UK career included hotel PR, continuity announcing on ITV Central, and then presenting on BBC local radio. She left Oxfordshire in 2004 to become an expat, moving to rural Mallorca. Jan has wanted to become a novelist since the age of eleven, when she sent her novel Jimmy – handwritten in lined exercise books – to a publisher; the kindly worded rejection letter was at least encouraging.

When Jan arrived in Mallorca, she intended to write the novel that had been brewing in her head for some months. But with no electricity in the house, she couldn’t use her computer – and her handwriting looks like the scrawl on a doctor’s prescription.

Once solar power was installed, rural living – and writing articles about different aspects of Mallorca – filled her days. It was due to Spain’s tough 2020 lockdown that Jan finally found time to finish Daughter of Deià.

She also produces/presents the podcast Authors in Mallorca and writes two blogs: Living in Rural Mallorca & Eat Drink Sleep Mallorca.

And, if you’re wondering, the cats featured are three of the five that currently share life with Jan and The Boss. In the past there have been as many as ten cats waiting for their twice-a-day meals.
